    LACFRW Scholarships

LACFRW supports an ongoing program of merit-based scholarships for high school seniors, both ladies and gentlemen, residing in Los Angeles County. The applicants must be registered Republicans, or support the Republican philosophy. The number of scholarships awarded is based on the financial support of clubs and individual members. Each year, one of the scholarships is awarded in memory of Marjorie Pope, a dedicated Federated Woman. Joan Castle-Joseff presents this award.

It is the responsibility of the club's Scholarship Chair to distribute current scholarship applications to local high schools. An application consists of a LACFRW Scholarship Coversheet and a one page, two -sided application form. The sponsoring club Scholarship Chair must complete the top portion of the application form prior to distribution. This section asks for the sponsoring club name, the scholarship chair's name, address and phone number, as well as student deadline for submission. This is the deadline for your club to receive the application for judging by your committee.

Students will complete the application form and compile an application package to include the one page signed and dated application from, an official transcript, two letters of recommendation, a description of a political or community service activity and a maximum 500 word essay on the topic, " What America Means To Me." This application package is sent to the sponsoring club Scholarship Chair by their specified deadline.

It is the responsibility of the Scholarship Chair to appoint a committee to review and judge their sponsoring club applicants. The single best applicant is to be submitted to the LACFRW Scholarship Chair for final judging. Sponsoring clubs are encouraged to keep a copy of submitted applications for their records. Please note: Only applicants submitted through a sponsoring club will be considered for scholarship awards, and only a single submission from each sponsoring club will be accepted. The finalist applications are due to the LACFRW Scholarship Chair in April, 2007.

The LACFRW Scholarship Chair will have a committee judge the final aapplicants and determine the winners. Applicants will be identified by a submission number and judged on a point system. Points will be awarede in the following categories:

    1. Academic Achievement, GPA and SAT Scores
    2. Extra Curricular Activities
    3. Community Activites
    4. Political Activities
    5. General Appearance of the Application package
    6. Essay
      1. Content and focus on the theme
      2. Clarity of expression
      3. Spelling
      4. Grammar

The LACFRW Scholarship Chair will serve as final arbiter in the event of a tie score and make a determination based on a holistic look at the entirety of the student's application package, including letters of recommendation, transcripts, achievements, activites, and interests. Scholarship winners are awarded their Certificates and checks at our May LACFRW Board of Directors meeting.
