Who May Register to Vote
You may register to vote if you meet the following criteria:
  • You are a United States citizen
  • You are a resident of California
  • You are at least 18 years of age (or will be by the date of the next election
  • You are not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony
  • You have not been judged by a court to be mentally incompetent to register and vote

The last day to register to vote in any election is 15 days prior to the election. However, only voters that are registered 29 days prior to an election, will be mailed a Sample Ballot and Voter Information Pamphlet by the Registrar of Voters and a California State Voter Guide by the Secretary of State.

How Important is One Vote?

Your vote is your voice in the governance of your city, county, state and country. As a citizen, you declare your rights and privileges with your vote.



  • In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England.
  • In 1649, one vote caused Charles I of England to be executed.
  • In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
  • In 1839, one vote elected Marcus Morton Governor of Massachusetts.
  • In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
  • In 1868, one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment.
  • In 1875, one vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic.
  • In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States.
  • In 1923, one vote gave Adolph Hitler leadership of the Nazi party.
  • In 1941, one vote saved Selective Service – just 12 weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked.
  • In 1960, John F. Kennedy won and Richard Nixon lost the presidential election by less than one vote per precinct.
